WASHINGTON —  The president of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and the presidents of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS), U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE), and U.S. National Academy of Medicine (NAM) have signed a five-year agreement to continue their cooperation on studies, workshops, and other activities in areas of mutual interest. 

The signing of the agreement marks 60 years of cooperation between the Russian and U.S. academies, which began in 1959 as a way to keep dialogue open and ideas flowing between Soviet and American scientists during the Cold War. These efforts have continued in recognition that contemporary global problems require global partnerships, along with scientific and technical solutions that necessitate cooperation across borders.

The new agreement, signed by RAS President Alexander Sergeev, NAS President Marcia McNutt, NAE President C. D. Mote, Jr., and NAM President Victor Dzau, identifies a wide range of areas for possible future cooperation, including energy issues, astrophysics, natural disaster response, and basic and applied medical research.

The NAS, NAE, and NAM are private, nongovernment institutions that provide independent, objective analysis and advice to the U.S. to solve complex problems and inform public policy decisions related to science, technology, and medicine.
